Bordered by Costa Rica to the south and Honduras toward the north lies Nicaragua, a tropical paradise you need to visit during your next holiday. The Pacific Ocean lies to its west with the Caribbean Sea to the east. The combination of land, the ocean and the sea literally divides Nicaragua into three main zones; the pacific lowlands, Caribbean lowlands and the central mainland highlands characterized by wet and cool weather conditions. It is in Nicaragua where you find the only fresh-water lakes in the whole of Central America; Lakes Managua and Nicaragua.
Attractions and Activities in Nicaragua
One place you cannot fail to visit when in Nicaragua is Granada, a city located on the western part of the country. The city has a very rich heritage linked to colonial times, something that is clearly evident in its architecture. There are various museums within the city that you will be able to visit. Some of the buildings you will need to see include the San Fransisco Church and Museum, Cathedral, the Episcopal Palace and San Antonio College amongst many others. Just southeast of the city is Lake Nicaragua with the famous islets of Granada made up of over 300 small Islands around the Asese peninsula.
Although there are other very important cities you will need to visit, Rivas town is one that you should not fail to visit during your tour. The beautiful town located between Lake Nicaragua and Pacific Ocean has various beach resorts overlooking sunning blue-water and white sandy beaches where you will be able to undertake swimming, snorkeling and fishing.
A visit to Corn Islands will not be in vain. Lying some 70 km off Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast line, the Islands give you a good opportunity to partake in scuba diving and snorkeling. You will be able to see such marine lives as spotted eagle rays, green sea turtles, hammerheads, Barracudas and nurse sharks amongst others. Nicaragua is very rich in both plant and animal diversity. There are over 70 protected areas you will be able to access to sample some of the rare mammals, birds, reptiles and fishes. Such protected areas include tropical rainforests, lakes, mountains and volcanoes.
The kind of activities available in Nicaragua will only be limited by time and your own ability. The country is known for its volcanic activity and there are countless volcanoes worth exploring. Hiking on Ometepe Island volcanoes will be a fulfilling experience. The various tropical rainforests also offer you a good opportunity to hike.
Perhaps what you will find very attractive, welcoming and refreshing during your Nicaragua holiday is how beautiful the tropical beaches are. The blue, clear water tropical beaches mainly on the Pacific Ocean are simply breathtaking. Waves on some of the beaches are very gentle, something that will make it possible for you to swim and fish. Some however have strong tides perfect for surfing. Of special mention is the un-spoilt Montelimar Beach on the Pacific coast where you will be able to surf, scuba dive and snorkel. This does not however mean that there are no beautiful tropical beaches on the Caribbean side; there are many.
Nicaragua is not only about attractions and activities; great food is readily available at very cheap prices. Meat, rice, beans, plantains, vegetables, cheese (fried and fresh), fishes and bananas are used in making different kinds of dishes that you will definitely find delicious. A common dish you will find sold even on streets and that you will need to sample is the Vigoron, a dish that comprises ground pork, cabbage salad and local yoca. Although Rum is the most common liquor in Nicaragua, you will have access to whisky and vodka as well. This is in addition to various brands of beer.
Like with food, you are likely to find cheap accommodation. You have the option of putting up in simple hammocks and hostels villas. You also have the option of putting up in family-owned accommodation facilities locally known as pensiones.
How to get there to Nicaragua
You can easily travel to Nicaragua by air, meaning that you will land at the international airport located near the Managua, the capital city. The airport receives direct flight from US and other regional countries. You can also come in by road just in case you happen to be in Costa Rica or Honduras.
When to Go to Nicaragua
Nicaragua’s weather conditions can simply be described as hot and cool. The lowlands are usually hot especially during dry months of November to April. The period between May and October is however associated with downpours in the lowlands when such areas can be very chilly. The highland areas are generally cool but can be very wet when it rains. Make it a point to travel to Nicaragua between November and April for a fulfilling holiday experience.
